Substation transformer design and manufacturing review

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & CLIENT CHALLENGES

This project provided engineering services to evaluate specific transformer design parameters and analyze dielectric test floor failures of two 161-69 kV 56MVA LTC transformers being built for projects in Boonville and Montgomery City. The scope of work involved a review of transformer design and manufacturing modifications, on-site inspection of the manufacturing quality in conjunction with these modifications, as well as on-site witnessing of all high-voltage dielectric testing.

The project to evaluate transformer design parameters and analyze dielectric test floor failures presented several challenges. Some of the challenges faced during this project included the following:

  • Review of Transformer Design: Our team had to review the transformer design and assess the impact of any modifications that had been made. This required a thorough understanding of the transformer design and the ability to identify potential issues by a transformer expert Principal Engineer.
  • Quality Inspection: The on-site inspection of the manufacturing quality was critical to the project’s success. Our team had to ensure that the quality of the manufacturing process was up to the required standards and that any modifications made did not impact the performance of the transformers.
  • High Voltage Dielectric Testing: Witnessing high voltage dielectric testing was a challenging aspect of the project, requiring specialized knowledge and expertise. Our team had to ensure that the testing was conducted accurately and safely and that any issues were identified and addressed in a timely manner.

RESULTS

Based on our team’s technical expertise, the transformer manufacturer made meaningful design modifications, providing engineering services to evaluate the specific transformer design parameters and analyze the dielectric test floor failures. The result was a safer, more reliable, and more efficient transformer design built to meet our client’s future needs.
