Substation Rebuilt Project

Sugar Creek substation rebuild and other 4kV to 12kV conversions

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & CLIENT CHALLENGES:

  • Project built a new 34.5/12kV Substation by replacing two fused transformers and switchgear lineups with new 34.5kV circuit switchers, 16.8/22.4 MVA transformers, and 15 kV metal-clad outdoor sheltered-aisle switchgear. The new switchgear will be equipped with SEL-751 relays with arc-flash detection.
  • Project converts circuits supplied by the Sugar Creek substation and other circuits throughout the City of Kirkwood to 12.47 kV. The project also converts distribution and transformer protection relays throughout the city from the obsolete ABB DPU and TPU platforms to modern SEL-700 series relays.
  • Prepared power system studies, conceptual designs, equipment specifications, and performed project management and detailed design.

RESULTS

The project will significantly improve the distribution system’s reliability, reduce system losses, and enhance protection algorithms. The new switchgear, equipped with SEL-751 relays with arc-flash detection, will also improve worker safety by reducing potential exposure to incident energy. In addition, the project management and design provided by LUZCO will result in reduced long-term operation and maintenance costs, making it a wise investment for the City of Kirkwood.

These upgrades will reduce distribution system losses and improve reliability with enhanced protection algorithms along with upgrading the existing aging infrastructure. New switchgear will protect workers’ safety by reducing potential exposure to incident energy. The project management and design provided by LUZCO will reduce long-term operation and maintenance costs.
