Brownfield Substation Reconfiguration Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & CLIENT CHALLENGES:

The client determined that a breaker and a half (BAAH) configuration were needed as the failure of the existing 138kV Bus-Tie Breaker would cause voltages less than 95% nominal on the 138kV system in the area of the substation. The reconfiguration to a BAAH arrangement eliminated the risk of dropping the 138kV station due to a breaker failure scenario. The project enhanced the reliability and operating flexibility of the Transmission System and allowed for future expansion of the Distribution System in the area.

    RESULTS

The LUZCO project team improved the reliability and operating flexibility of the Transmission System with the breaker and a half configuration. The new arrangement accommodated an initial seven positions with room for future expansion for ten positions.
